I came across this very inspirational poem by Ruth Smeltzer today….
“Some measure their lives by days and years,
Others by heart throbs, passion and tears;
But the surest measure under the sun,
Is what in your lifetime for others you have done.”
This has particularly deep meaning for me. I hate to admit it but I have not given much thought to how I would like to lead my life, until over a year ago. While I thought that serving others is an important goal, I also thought that this can surely wait until I have gotten more wealth and more time.
For the major part of my life, I cared more about my own needs. I also did not realise that serving others need not be done in any big way. Small acts of kindness also count. It is not that I have not done them. I have but not often enough.
(Need some examples? It can be as small as lending a listening ear to your husband even though you would much prefer to watch your favorite TV program. Or helping your neighbour overcome an emergency with some babysitting, even though you have got a mountain of tasks to do. Or lending a helping hand to a complete stranger at the supermarket with carrying his groceries, even though you are in a rush. )
I also did not realise how good it felt to serve. Over a year ago, I decided to focus more on giving and setting aside the tons of get-rich-quick programs that I have committed in promoting. Soon, I started receiving emails from people about how much my articles have helped them make the right decisions. I then moved on to answering questions posted online by people who have been depressed, lost or confused. I found that the words just flowed from my heart in answer to what they sought. I only knew how great it felt to serve when I received more than a single email from strangers about how much hope I have given them.
So the “Aha” moment came. Therein lies the secret. It’s not about making more money to gain happiness. I feel grateful for all the small instances of feedback. They helped to reinforce and to validate how good it feels to serve.
Albert Schweitzer, a Nobel Prize winner, wrote…
“The only ones among you who will truly be happy are those who have sought and found how to serve”.
I have not intentionally sought happiness while trying to serve but I have derived much happiness when I did.
So here is another secret for you. Other than feeling gratitude to activate the Law of Attraction, you can make it a point to be nice or do an act of kindness for others. When you have the intent to serve, you are generating positive thoughts. Your positive action to others generate a positive feedback to you by the recipient. The feedback creates more positive thoughts inside you. An abundance of positive energy vibrations sends signals to the Universe to also give you more of the same. Additionally, benefits, whether material or non-material, sometimes arrive in other ways not known to you. Not a bad idea to serve, huh?

My dear Evelyn,
I am so pleased to hear and read what has happened in your life these past few years. You definitely have taken the road less traveled and are reaping the rewards of your efforts. Dear Dr James and Mamadou,
Thank you for being one of those who have given me positive feedback. One to two years back, I wouldn’t have believed that I would move on to writing articles on self help. However, I realise that I cannot not help others in need now. There are far too many people in the world who are lost and depressed, and less fortunate than I.
If I carried on doing some of my previous ventures, perhaps I would have made more money. But I would not have gained much more in wisdom and true happiness.
In deep appreciation for your kind feedback,
Evelyn
I love reading your newsletters Evelyn. You have a gift of attracting like minded souls with your words of inspiration. When one has made up their mind to reject negative thoughts, ideas, and beliefs by tuning in to more soul enlightened reading, movies, television programs, or acts of kindness , it often becomes a happy experience from within you are seeking.
You have the ability and freedom to create in your mind whatever you choose. Choose to let only the happy, joyous, and loving enter your thoughts, and as often as possible. When you catch yourself thinking empty, fear, helpless or worthless thoughts, STOP.
Tell yourself a different story, lie to yourself in a good way, change the lies your are telling yourself fast. Make it up like an author would do. Because in the end, it doesn’t matter whether the story is true or not, the only thing that matters is how you feel about the story you are telling yourself.
Raising those vibrations up, generates more of what you desire to have. Feeding your self better sure helps too.
