I decided to call upon my creativity skills to come up with a new header image. It took some thinking to put a concept together. The illustration is that of a woman in greyscale, with her thoughts morphed to colorful butterflies, large and small, against a cloudy dreamy sky. Turning from grey to color indicates from darkness in thought to a world of possibilites. Butterflies are used to represent movement, air and light. Like the concept?
Well, I am conducting a small test to see if the new graphical look suits this site better as compared to the previous one that you see. The previous one came from a standard template that did not have any header image.
I had planned to do something else this evening but just could not resist going with the flow of my creative juices. I’ve never revealed this but art and design has been one of the skills I have buried in favor of skills that can help make me money. You see….my parents did not think much about encouraging me to explore my strengths when I was young. Instead, I was encouraged to take subjects that will get me a job easily. I did reasonably well in school, so there was no reason to develop technical skills anyway. My love for art stayed buried for a long time.
Until I started working. Suddenly, I had money to do whatever I wanted. The funds came from my stiff banking job. I poured myself into ceramic painting, pottery, graphic design and folk art painting. In my spare time, I escaped into another world. I was happy when I painted.
Then, I had to give these up when my kids came. After a while, I got bored again. I realised that while I love being with my kids, I needed something mentally stimulating. I started to design. I sold my design pieces to a bedding manufacturer and my costume jewelry pieces at a shop in Orchard Road (main shopping district in Singapore). It felt wonderful that there would be people who would buy my pieces, when I never had the training or was ever schooled in the proper skills. I was self taught. I borrowed books from the library so that I can graduate painting by hand to using Photoshop for design.
The funny thing was that was how I got started in wanting to do an online business. I thought that it would be fun to create my own websites. Sure…they weren’t all that pretty but just the creation process itself was good enough to keep me interested. Until now, I have never outsourced anyone to build a site for me. It would have make more sense to get someone more knowledgeable as I am not technically inclined. But no…call me silly but I would rather figure things out myself.
It is amazing that I can get to explore my creativity in so many ways, even though I did not have that much of a chance much younger. I just read in a marketing brochure, which is promoting art classes for children, that art allows one the chance to engage in whole brain thinking and that it helps in relaxation. The brochure landed in my mailbox at a good time….you guess right……I have already signed my kids up for the classes. My kids have already shown that they enjoy art and dance; no mere coincidence, since I have been demonstrating these to them from the time they were babies, and they have demonstrated a natural flair and liking for creative expressions.
Which brings me to the point that if you need another way of exercising your right brain, consider doing some art. Make it a regular habit.
All known genuises have made use of their right brain to invent products, new breakthroughs and to come up with creative solutions.
Albert Einstein said…
“To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in science.”
You would never know. The creative solution you seek may just surface, after you paint up a storm!

Dear Evelyn
So far your creative capabilities revealed to us is an inexhaustible source of life.
As for Art & Design creation , i think it is just the representation on the paper
of what we have in our mind.
As you said in your previous articles ,through vizualisation we can form the image of our dream, and from there whatever is really painted in our mindset can be transmitted into art or design
With best regards.
